Rock those socks!

There are a few different ways to treat varicose veins. One of the easiest methods is wearing medical compression socks. Today, we are going to take a look at what medical compression socks are and their benefits. Let's get into it!

What Are Medical Compression Socks?

One thing to keep note of is that medical compression is different from regular compression. If you are specifically looking for relief from varicose veins, your typical compression socks you may find at the store—while they still have benefits—will not be helpful with that. So what classifies as medical-grade compression? This is when the sock is tighter at the ankle than it is at the calf. This type of compression sock has to meet strict medical qualifications. They must give a particular level of pressure and graduation of compression. Your vein specialist will be able to advise you on which level is best suited for your needs.

How Do Compression Socks Help With Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins appear when the blood has trouble flowing through weakened veins, and instead pools in them, which causes them to bulge. Compression socks can lower the amount of blood that pools and calm this swelling. As we mentioned, medical-grade compression socks are tighter at the bottom than they are at the top. This is so they can push the blood back towards the heart, where it was trying to go in the first place. These socks can alleviate aches and pains, reduce varicose vein symptoms during pregnancy, lower the chances of varicose veins reappearing post-treatment, and more. They do not eliminate existing varicose veins, but rather, help with the symptoms that they cause, including itchiness and tired legs.

*Note: If you have peripheral neuropathy, peripheral artery disease, dermatitis, or skin infections, compression therapy may worsen symptoms. Remember to talk with your doctor or vein specialist to see if this treatment is right for you.*
