Are you looking for your next great binge?

Imagine the opulent lifestyle of Downton Abbey set in the heart of New York and you get the idea behind The Gilded Age. Julian Fellowes dreamed up this delicious new show after the end of his blockbuster series about life in an English ancestral estate. Forget household quarrels among servants and the aristocracy; this show is all about the battle between old money and new.

As for the cast, the incomparable Christine Baranski is perfectly cast as the dry-witted Old Guard matriarch, Agnes. Nothing is good enough for her, much less the new money wannabes like the Carnegies and the Russells across the street. Cynthia Nixon as the clueless Aunt Ada is another casting coup. The show's writers do a great job of weaving in actual 19th-century socialites with the fictional characters for an extra layer of authenticity.

The developing city is as much of a main character as any of the actors. Marvel at the sculpted hand of the Statue of Liberty, on display as it would have been in Madison Square Park. Historians will love to see New York landmarks in their infancy, up close and personal. You even get to explore the other boroughs and go across the river to Brooklyn.

Fans of the series are already hitting Twitter with plenty of accolades for the complicated love stories and larger-than-life characters. Don't get me wrong, this show isn't all about sedate tea parties and American history. It has plenty of drama, romantic entanglements, and intrigue to keep you coming back for more week after week. If it's all about the high fashion for you, The Gilded Age certainly delivers.

If you want to take a trip back in time, The Gilded Age is currently available to stream on HBO Max. It will be easy to get caught up, as new episodes are spaced out, airing on Monday nights at 9 p.m. EST. Fans were thrilled with the Valentine's Day news that the series has already been renewed for Season 2.
