The weather outside is frightful, but canine outerwear is delightful!

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), there are several ways to tell if your dog even needs a sweater. Shivering is the most obvious outward sign, along with faster breathing and cold ears and feet. Short-haired dogs generally get colder than their long-haired buddies, so keep an eye on them if you're in doubt.

Here are some great examples of dog sweaters to keep your four-legged family members warm.

1. Knit Plaid Jacket ($39.93 | Land's End)

With its sherpa lining and faux fur collar, this jacket is all about the details. A Velcro strap makes getting it on and off a breeze and the overall design is cozy-chic.

Yes, it's a bit pricey, but this waterproof jacket is actually a cozy fleece with a protective outer layer that can be worn three different ways. This would be ideal for rain, snow, or anything Mother Nature throws at you and your pooch.

If you're in a particularly cold region, or are taking your dog out in the snow, you may want to pair any of these options with a pair of cold weather booties. You wouldn't walk around barefoot in the winter, and neither should they!
