The Rockies will be extending and upgrading the protective netting behind home plate in order to ensure the highest amount of safety for fans.
More changes are coming to Coors Field this season. In addition to the giant new scoreboard and other renovation projects, the Colorado Rockies will be adding a new protective netting behind home plate. With safety being the team's highest priority, for fans and players alike, this new installation will extend all the way to the end of each dugout. Completion of the new safety installation is expected to be complete by early March. The Rockies aren't the only MLB team implementing this change. MLB Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. said,
"Providing baseball fans with a variety of seating options when they come to the ballpark, including seats behind protective netting, is important."Numerous studies have been conducted over the years, including one from 2014 that found, on average, 1,750 fans are injured by broken bats or foul balls every year. Last year, three people -- two of them children -- were injured at Yankee Stadium. Manfred continued, saying that, "Major League Clubs are constantly evaluating the coverage and design of their ballpark netting, and I am pleased that they are providing fans an increased inventory of protected seats."
