A sports merchandising company has created a new bobblehead to celebrate the nation’s infectious disease doctor Dr. Anthony Fauci. The bobblehead memorializes Fauci’s stance as he threw out the first pitch at the Washington Nationals season opener on July 23, 2020. The pitch wasn’t exactly major league level, but at least you could say it was socially distanced. Fauci was chosen by the 2019 World Series Champions Washington Nationals to throw out the first pitch at the team’s first home game against the New York Yankees.

The resin bobblehead is designed by FOCO and features Fauci wearing a Nationals jersey, hat, and a special Nationals World Champions mask. His name and “First Pitch 2020” are printed on the base. The bobblehead is $40 and is available for pre-order now at Foco.com. The product will ship sometime in November.

Although Dr. Fauci practiced for his turn on the mound, his pitch attempt ended up going a little haywire. The ball curved to the left and pitcher Sean Doolittle had to chase after it. After a rain delay and cancellation, the Nationals ending losing to the Yankees, 4–1.

This isn’t the first bobblehead made in Fauci’s likeness. The Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases was also made into a bobblehead by the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum in Milwaukee in April. Proceeds from that bobblehead went to the American Hospital Association to purchase personal protective equipment for doctors and nurses across the U.S.

The 79 year-old doctor has also been featured on a variety of merchandise including t-shirts, socks, coffee mugs, masks, and more. A local D.C. bar even created a cocktail in a pouch called the “Fauci Pouchy” for its carryout customers.
