Pelé, one of the world's most celebrated soccer players, has died. He was 82.

Pelé's death was confirmed by his manager, Joe Fraga. He died at the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo after battling cancer.

An official statement from his Instagram page said, “Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pelé, who peacefully passed away today. On his journey, Edson enchanted the world with his genius in sport, stopped a war, carried out social works all over the world and spread what he most believed to be the cure for all our problems: love. His message today becomes a legacy for future generations. Love, love and love, forever.”

Pelé won three World Cup tournaments with Brazil and 10 league titles with Santos, his club team, and the 1977 North American Soccer League championship with the New York Cosmos.

Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento on October 23, 1940, Pelé's professional career began when he was only 15 years old. He made his international debut a year later. Then in 1999, he was voted player of the century in a poll of Ballon d’Or winners.
