Chicken and waffles are everywhere but Astro has gone a bit farther to create NoVA's next big taste sensation: doughnuts and fried chicken.

What is it about fried chicken that makes it go so well with something sweet? At Astro Doughnut and Fried Chicken, you don't have to choose between sweet or savory, breakfast or lunch. They do it all, and they do it really, really well.

Delivery from the Falls Church location is consistently warm and delicious and arrives with a minimum of fuss. Maybe it has to do with their simple menu, but they truly have takeout down to a science. You can visit both of their DMV locations, order online, or hunt down their food truck. However you do it, you have to give them a try!

Here's what I would recommend:

The doughnuts here are incredible. They're the big, gourmet kind that seem expensive until you realize just how good they really are. They do monthly seasonal specials, and the September carrot cake doughnut is not to be missed. Dense, sweet, and topped with cream cheese frosting, it's the perfect treat.

The crême brulée doughnut has actual custard inside and a crunchy sugar top, just like your favorite dessert.

The fried chicken sandwich comes with several interesting options for a bun: a cheddar biscuit, a potato roll, a sweet or a savory doughnut. There's a wide range of sauces (I go for the sriracha mayo) and add-ons to really make it your own.

The mac and cheese is a saucy, rich dish of cheesy yumminess. One cup is plenty to share if you're having it as a side.

If you're in of a bit of a takeout slump, try Astro Doughnuts and Fried Chicken. You won't regret it!
