Lucky for us! The DMV has some choice-doughnut picks.

Whether stuffed with jelly and cinnamon apples, topped with sticky glaze, or sprinkled with sparkly bits of candy, fried dough is a treat we all can relate to with our morning coffee, afternoon tea, mid-day snack, or just because. Food & Wine recently reported their list of best doughnuts in every state. We’ve combined their choices with some of our own to come up with a tasty trio (and a few more) of DMV doughnut choices.

Maryland

Krumpe’s Do-Nuts, located in an alley in historic Hagerstown, has been satisfying late-night cravings since 1950. The Maryland Avenue shop is open from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. They offer a wide variety of cake, glazed, powdered, and jelly doughnuts as well as holes, eclairs, and twists topped with peanut butter, coconut, or cinnamon sugar. You can get fresh fruit toppings in the summer months.

At the end of Carnival season (Fasnacht Day is on Shrove Tuesday), around February 15 or 16, they have Pennsylvania Dutch-style Fasnacht (square, round, or triangular in shape and made with mashed potatoes and yeast dough). Other Maryland doughnut destinations we recommend:

  • 202 Donuts and Coffee in Bethesda
  • Paradise Donuts in Bel Air
  • Hoehn’s Bakery in Baltimore.

Virginia

Owned by a Mennonite family, Mrs. Yoder’s Kitchen mixes the simplicity of “olden times” with the modern era of food truck-style shops. They started out on the Richmond farmers’ market scene and can be found at locations such as Westbury Pharmacy in Henrico, Red Rooster Country Store in Mechanicsville, The Great Big Greenhouse, or Colonial Heights Farmers’ Market, among others. You can check out their weekly schedule on Facebook. For more doughy goodness in the Old Dominion, check out some of these locations:

  • Mac’s Donuts in Arlington
  • Texas Donuts in Centreville
  • Sugar Shack in multiple locations.

Washington, D.C.

District Doughnut and Coffee has been voted the Best Doughnuts in D.C. five times. Made from scratch daily, these artisanal gourmet doughnuts are made with real fruit, milk, eggs, and cream. Choose from seasonal varieties like blueberry glazed, lemon bar, and dulce de leche crème brule as well as pastry cream, jelly, glaze and ganache toppings. Multiple locations include Georgetown, Barracks Row, The Wharf, Union Market, and Ballston Market in Arlington, Virginial. They even deliver.

The DMV always has great food fare, events, and community every week.
