Quotes from hits like “Love Me Tender” and “I’m Yours” will be printed on the hearts.

A popular Valentine’s Day candy is returning to shelves this year with a cute update. Sweethearts® candy hearts are a staple for people of all ages celebrating the holiday of love. In 2018, the candy was purchased by Spangler Candy after Necco ceased operations. No candy hearts were produced in 2019 and last year Spangler was only available to distribute a limited number of the small candy boxes. This year Spangler wanted to celebrate on a “high note” by printing quotes from 21 popular love songs. Regular sayings like “Hug Me” and “Be Mine” will still appear on the candies.

Quotes have been pulled from songs spanning over seven decades of history and include favorites like Elvis Presley’s “LUVME TENDER,” Etta James “AT LAST” and “SUGAR SUGAR” by the Archies.

"There have been hundreds of sayings featured on Sweethearts Candies over the years, but after a year unlike any other, we knew we wanted to add a high note to the season," said Diana Eschhofen, Spangler Candy's Director, Corporate Communications. "Opening or exchanging a box of Sweethearts uniquely encourages connection in a way that sparks feelings of cheer, happiness, and nostalgia. With this in mind, we came up with the idea to create sayings inspired by our favorite heart-themed songs over the decades, because what better way to bring a smile to someone's face than being reminded of a melody.”

Created in 1902, Sweethearts® was a special holiday version of the popular Necco sugar wafers. The hearts come in flavors like wintergreen, orange, lemon, blue raspberry, banana, grape, and cherry. Over the years other candy companies have produced candy hearts with a softer texture as well as sweet and sour versions, but Sweethearts® has always been the gold standard. Sweethearts® are available in single boxes or five count packages at grocery and drug stores.
