In theory, Pretzel Pop-Tarts could be a great combination. What's the reality?

Step aside, strawberries. There's a new flavor in town.

Known for their quirky innovations for their popular breakfast pastry, the folks in the Pop-Tarts factory came up with another great idea: chocolate and cinnamon sugar Pretzel Pop-Tarts.

News of them was quietly released in November, and they will have their splashy global debut during the big game next month. Their new spokesperson, Jonathan van Ness (the hair and beauty guru of Queer Eye fame) couldn't help but tweet about his excitement for the ad campaign.

I found them easily at Wal-mart and went with the cinnamon sugar variety, hoping for something even remotely similar to an Auntie Anne's pretzel. Sadly, they didn't quite live up to my expectations.

Toasted, they went crisp around the edges and strangely lacked a pronounced pretzel flavor. The cinnamon sugar filling was too thin and non-descript to make an impression on me. Not heated, straight out of the box, they were marginally better but still missing the distinct salty and sweet combination promised on the packaging. It may just be me—this guy loves them!

For the time being, I'll stick to frosted strawberry and daydream about the sweet cinnamon-sugar pretzels instead.
