16 people in the U.S. got sick due to the contamination.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the J. M. Smucker Co. is recalling various Jif peanut butter products due to potential Salmonella contamination, as of May 20.

The recalled peanut butter was distributed across the United States in retail stores and other outlets. Sixteen people got sick due to the contamination.

"Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis," says the FDA.
