Check your freezers for the take-and-bake versions of this famous Maryland pizza. It's being recalled for missing inspections prior to being sold to the public.

In a recall notice issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the landmark Maryland restaurant, Pizza John's, is actively recalling two bake-at-home versions of their pepperoni pizza. The items included in the notice did not undergo a federal level of inspection before being made available to the general public.

There have been no reports to date of adverse reactions due to these packaged pizzas, but consumers should not eat them if they bear the UPC codes listed below.

The two products in this recall were produced by Pizza John's between March 2020 and July 2022 and they include over 156,000 pounds of pizza:

  • 33.25-oz. clear plastic wrapped packages containing “PIZZA JOHN’S BAKE AT HOME 12 Inch Pepperoni Pizza” (UPC code 9589334921)
  • 57-oz. clear plastic wrapped packages containing “PIZZA JOHN’S BAKE AT HOME 16 Inch Pepperoni Pizza” (UPC code 958939019)

The pizzas may have been purchased from multiple retail locations in Maryland like Weis Markets or Shop Rite grocery stores. Consumers should not eat the affected products, rather, they should return them to the retailer where they were purchased, even without the original receipt. Cite the current USDA recall as your reason for return.
