The Prince of Wales is now self-isolating in Scotland.

Prince Charles has tested positive for coronavirus, his office announced Wednesday.

Son to Queen Elizabeth II and heir to the British throne, Prince Charles has "been displaying mild symptoms but otherwise remains in good health," said Clarence House in a statement. He is now self-isolating at Birkhall, his home in Scotland on the Balmoral estate.

It is not known how the Prince of Wales caught the virus, mostly due to his recent busy schedule of public events. His last public event occurred on March 12, where he met with several individuals, all of whom have been apprised of the situation.

"It is not possible to ascertain from whom the Prince caught the virus owing to the high number of engagements he carried out in his public role during recent weeks," Clarence House said.

It's believed by medical experts that Prince Charles could have been contagious as early as March 13.

Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, is also at Birkhall and self-isolating separately from Prince Charles. She was tested but the results came back negative.

The Prince of Wales has not been to a hospital, sources say. He has spoken with the Queen and his sons, William and Harry.

The Queen last saw her son briefly at the palace on March 12 following an investiture ceremony for public awards. According to a spokesperson from Buckingham Palace, the Queen is in "good health" and "following all the appropriate advice with regard to her welfare."

It is not known if she has been tested.

In a statement by Queen Elizabeth II, she said:

"We are enormously thankful for the expertise and commitment of our scientists, medical practitioners and emergency and public services; but now more than any time in our recent past, we all have a vitally important part to play as individuals - today and in the coming days, weeks and months.

Many of us will need to find new ways of staying in touch with each other and making sure that loved ones are safe. I am certain we are up to that challenge. You can be assured that my family and I stand ready to play our part."
