Just when you thought 2020 couldn't get any weirder, this happens.

Recent storms stirred up a ton of sea foam along the beaches of New South Wales and Queensland, Australia. And we say "a ton," we mean a ton. But, there's more than meets the eye when it comes to the sea foam ...

In fact, reports are suggesting (and warning) residents that something may be lurking beneath the surface of the sea foam—sea snakes.

"Health-wise it's probably not great to let your kids play in it," Nathan Fife, Gold Coast Lifesaving services supervisor at Surf Lifesaving Australia, told Guardian Australia. "Also, the marine creatures that might get in it, like sea snakes."

Around Australia, there are more than 30 species of poisonous sea snakes. The scary part is, bites may not be apparent for up to 30 minutes; if bitten, antivenom is required. Only one death from sea snakes has been recorded in Australian waters, says Guardian Australia.

A video shows just how much of the sea foam there actually is (aka enough for a dog to get lost in):

In addition to the potential of crossing paths with a sea snake in the foam, Fife also said that surges of water, which may not be seen beneath the sea foam, could cause people to fall over, or even be taken out to sea.

"There's a lot of debris coming out—there's been trees and things like that have washed up ... so make sure what's in front of you—there are trees and logs floating around, so please be careful," he said.
