The 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games will be postponed. Details to come in the following weeks.

On Monday, USA Today spoke with veteran International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Dick Pound, who has stated that the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided,” Pound said in an interview with USA Today. "The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know."

It's possible that the Olympic Games could be delayed until 2021. Pound said that the IOC will be revealing its next steps in the near future.

"It will come in stages,” he said. "We will postpone this and begin to deal with all the ramifications of moving this, which are immense."

When USA Today asked for an additional response from the IOC, spokesperson Mark Adams said, "It is the right of every IOC member to interpret the decision of the IOC executive board which was announced yesterday."

This statement is in reference to the announcement made on Sunday by IOC President Thomas Bach, who said he was going to take the following four weeks to make a decision on this year's Olympic Games, to get things "worked out."

Bach has "ruled out canceling" the Olympics, according to USA Today.

It's also been recently reported that Japan Olympic Committee President Yasuhiro Yamashita is considering postponing the Olympics, according to Reuters. On Monday, Yamashita said:

"From the athletes’ point of view of safety and security, we have to come to a stage where we cannot help but consider things including postponement."

Now, if the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games were to take place, as scheduled, both the Canadian and Australian teams would not compete. The Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Paralympic Committee announced on Sunday that they will "not send Canadian teams to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the summer of 2020." And the Australian Olympic Committee "unanimously agreed" to not send athletes to the Games.
