Are we really that surprised, though?

According to new data from Cloudfare, a web security and performance company, TikTok was 2021's most popular website. But are we that surprised? Not at all.

Last year, TikTok only ranked No. 7 on Cloudfare's list. The video platform jumped all the way to the No. 1 spot for 2021, beating out Google and Facebook—both of which were the top 2 spots in 2020, respectively.

Using its "Cloudfare Radar" tracking tool, the company also ranked TikTok as the most popular social media website.

"In what was the second year of the pandemic, social media domains continued high on our ranking," Cloudflare wrote in its blog. "The nine main social media applications were all in our top 100 list of most popular global domains ... We can see that TikTok ... took Facebook from its crown of the most popular social media website-domain in our ranking."
