The bottled water was imported from Mexico and sold under the name Peñafiel.

It’s time to check your cabinets for the latest recall. Bottled water sold at Walmart, Whole Foods, and Target stores has just been recalled due to high levels of arsenic. The water is distributed to stores by Keurig Dr. Pepper and is sold under the name Peñafiel. The recall is voluntary with support by the Food and Drug Administration.

The recall was announced on June 21, 2019, after an independent laboratory found samples of Peñafiel mineral water had levels of more than 10 parts per billion of arsenic. Arsenic is a naturally occurring mineral that is toxic at high levels, causing a myriad of illnesses including cancer. Exposure at very high levels over a short period of time can lead to death.

Peñafiel is sold in 600 ml and 1.5L bottles, and all current product codes are affected. The brand has been in distribution in small quantities at stores including Target, Whole Foods, and Walmart. If you have any Peñafiel water, please return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Keurig Dr. Pepper has installed new filtration systems to ensure new bottles of Peñafiel are in compliance with FDA standards for drinking water.
