The restrictions were originally set to expire on March 18.

The nationwide mandates to wear masks on airplanes, trains, and in transit hubs have been extended, a Biden administration official told Reuters.

These mask mandates were set to expire on March 18, but it's since been extended to May 3.

According to reports, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will be working with government agencies over the next month.

"During that time, CDC will work with government agencies to help inform a revised policy framework for when, and under what circumstances, masks should be required in the public transportation corridor. This revised framework will be based on the COVID-19 community levels, risk of new variants, national data, and the latest science," said the administration official in a statement.

The current CDC transit order requires masks to be worn by all travelers on airplanes, ships, trains, subways, buses, taxis, and ride-shares and at transportation hubs (i.e., airports, bus or ferry terminals, train and subway stations, and seaports).

The mandate has been in place since January 2021. Meanwhile, airports began requiring travelers to wear masks in mid-2020.
