Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his burrow on a chilly Wednesday morning.

According to Punxsutawney Phil, there will be six more weeks of winter. The groundhog emerged from his burrow around 7:15 a.m. on Wednesday morning at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, in order to see if the furry critter would see his shadow or not.

Legend has it that if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, it means six more weeks of winter. If not, it’s an early spring. Regardless of Phil’s prediction, though, the first day of spring is March 20.

The prediction was broadcast live on Facebook and YouTube.

A few years ago, the tradition has come under scrutiny from animal rights organization PETA. In a letter penned to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, PETA declared that this Groundhog Day tradition should no longer include a live groundhog.

PETA's solution? An animatronic groundhog.

Ingrid Newkirk, PETA President, writes, "By creating an AI Phil, you could keep Punxsutawney at the center of Groundhog Day but in a much more progressive way."

Did you know that Nostradamus had predictions for 2022, too? An apocalypse, famine, and asteroids, oh my!
