The theme for this holiday season is “America the Beautiful”.

First Lady Melania Trump has revealed the annual Christmas display at The White House. In a video posted on social media, the First Lady walked from room to room, unveiling the beautiful holiday decor. Decorating the White House is a tradition that is designated each year to the First Lady, who picks a theme, designs the layout, and puts it all together with help of volunteers.

This year’s theme is “America the Beautiful” and showcases landscapes from around the nation.

The East Wing Colonnade features urns with trees from each of the states and territories and the nearby East Garden room displays this year’s holiday card along with versions from administrations past and the Gold Star Family Tree, adorned with the names of fallen loved ones.

The White House library decor pays homage to the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, legislation that gave women the right to vote. Earlier in the year, the First Lady held an art competition for kids about the 19th Amendment and the winners from the competition are part of the display. Down the hall, you’ll find the China Room, home to the collection of White House China patterns and the First Family’s personal Christmas stockings.

The upstairs East Room features the American accomplishments in transportation beginning with the First Continental Railroad. The design also includes a myriad of planes, trains, and automobiles, along with an America the Beautiful-themed model train. The Green Room is filled with art landscape pieces; the Blue Room is home to the official White House Christmas tree, decorated with ornaments created by children in each state. A tree in the Red Room is decorated with handmade ornaments dedicated to the first responders and frontline workers working hard during the pandemic.

A large gingerbread house, located in the state dining room, was made by The White House pastry chefs, who made sure the sweet replica of our nation’s Presidential residence was decorated with characteristics of this year’s theme.

The 2020 White House Christmas Ornament is a gilded painting of President John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States. The ornament has been placed on trees in the Vermeil Room, home to the People’s House artifact collections established by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. The ornament is on sale now at The White House Historical Association.
