Amazon will be hiring 100,000 people and raising wages by $2 an hour.

As demand grows for groceries, cleaning supplies, and medical supplies, Amazon and the nation's grocery stores are hiring more people to deal with the demand. Safeway, Kroger, Harris Teeter, and King Soopers are just some of the stores hiring people to stock, clean, and fill mobile orders. In a press briefing on March 16, President Trump asked Americans to stop hoarding and only buy what they need.

Just days into the coronavirus outbreak, many shoppers are coming up empty when they visit local stores. Faced with shortages, many people have turned to Amazon to fill in the gaps. To cope with the surge in demand, Amazon has announced they will be hiring an additional 100,000 people around the globe. Part-time and full-time positions are available and no resume is needed. To reward the existing employees that have working hard during this emergency, Amazon is bumping up pay by $2 per hour through April.

Amazon also sent a notice to all sellers on Tuesday that it would not be accepting “non-essential” items in its warehouses until April 5, 2020. The retailer is working to increase the stock of in-demand products like groceries, beauty and personal care, baby supplies, pet food, and medical supplies.

Grocery stores are also staffing up and hiring people for part-time and full-time positions. Many stores across the country have been overwhelmed by large crowds and have been reducing their daily operating hours. In the off-hours stores have been deep cleaning, restocking, and giving overworked employees a much-needed break.

Trucking companies are also having difficulty keeping up with deliveries. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has issued a national emergency to provide hours-of-service relief to the industry. Drivers can work longer to deliver essentials like groceries and medical supplies but are still subject to a minimum of 10 hours off between deliveries.
