Starting in October, residents of Christianburg, Virginia, may be eligible to receive their Walgreens orders via drone delivery!

Walgreens and Wing Aviation, LLC have partnered together to create a pilot program which would enable drones to do customer order delivery. Wing's unmanned drones will be loaded at the store and controlled remotely by Wing's GPS-guided system to send packages directly to customers' homes.

The focus of the new program will be getting products to customers in a more timely manner using cutting-edge technology.

“Walgreens continues to explore partnerships to transform and modernize our customer experience and we are proud to be the first retailer in the U.S. to offer an on-demand commercial drone delivery option with Wing,” said Vish Sankaran, chief innovation officer, Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc.

Common concerns about drone deliveries are addressed by the unique design of the aircraft. Backup battery packs, flight stabilizers, and multiple motors all work together to make sure the flights are completed safely. This pilot program is the first of its kind to be approved by the Federal Aviation Administration in the U.S.

Residents of Christianburg will receive information from Walgreens about the new service in the coming weeks. For now, they will be limited to a list of about 100 common items and specially-curated packs of helpful items. These customized packages are related to common illnesses like "the allergy pack" or "the cough/cold pack" and will be available for easier, one-click shopping.

For more information, check out the official Walgreens press release about the pilot program. If you live in the Christianburg area and want to sign up for the trial program, visit the Wing website and enter your contact information. You will also be invited to attend informational sessions on the new delivery service.
