As the epic summer closure of six NoVA Metro stations comes to an end, riders will find more than just new platforms under their feet.

The end of summer will bring back six vital Metro stations south of Reagan National Airport. WMATA's Platform Improvement Project has had both the blue and yellow lines closed south of DCA for months, and riders are anxious to get back to their normal commutes.

Along with a general overhaul of each station that includes cleaning, painting, and updating of lights, some creature comforts were thrown in for good measure.

Here is a list of some of the additional improvements you'll see once the stations are back online:

  • USB charging ports on new stainless steel shelters: This can be a lifesaver if you're out and about—no more squatting down next to an outlet!
  • Slip-resistant tiles: Anyone who has bitten the dust on a Metro platform in front of dozens of onlookers knows what a big deal this one is.
  • Improved sound systems and speakers: No more announcements by Charlie Brown's teacher!
  • Lighted handrails

For more information on these additional improvements, you can read the WMATA press release about these station upgrades.

As a reminder, the six stations affected by the Platform Improvement Project are Braddock Road, King Street-Old Town, Eisenhower Avenue, Huntington, Van Dorn Street, and Franconia-Springfield. The work is slated to finish by September 8, 2019, and until then, these stations are completely closed. In some cases, the repairs extend to the adjacent parking structures as well.

While the six stations are closed, you can use the WMATA Trip Planner to help you get around using other methods like shuttles and buses.
