Out with the old and in with the new. The old sign will light up for the last time on March 1.

A Baltimore landmark will be disappearing from the horizon for a little while. After more than 70 years of lighting the Baltimore harbor, the Domino Sugar sign will be taken down and replaced with a newer, energy-efficient version. The red neon sign has been a staple in the harbor, revered by tourists in their selfies and immortalized by couples in their wedding day pictures. Although the new sign won’t have any neon components, it will closely mimic the old sign.

The Domino Sugar sign has been a steadfast beacon in the city, lighting up every evening after the sun goes down. After 70 years in the bay, the steel has been degraded by the salty sea air, and the number of people able to fix and repair the delicate neon tubes has declined. The company decided it was a good time to remove the old sign and replace it with something more durable.

The new sign is being designed and built by Baltimore’s own Gable Signs. Gable has created signs for other prominent Baltimore landmarks including M&T Bank Stadium, Transamerica, Baltimore Museum of Industry, and Montgomery Park. In a statement on its Facebook page, Gable said they are honored to take on this important project.

“Signs like this capture the minds and hearts of people that live in, work in, and visit the city. All of us at Gable are excited to play a role in the 'remastering' of this historic beacon for Baltimore.”

The steel letters of the sign will be completely replaced and all the existing neon will be replaced with energy-efficient LED tubing. The project is expected to be completed for an unveiling this summer on the Fourth of July.
