Humane Society International has just helped to close down another dog meat farm in South Korea. This 14th closure is sending hundreds of dogs all over the world, and 12 have come to D.C.

Humane Society International (HSI), along with local partners in South Korea, have closed down another dog meat farm. D.C.'s own Humane Rescue Alliance will help find forever homes for 12 puppies who were rescued.

In some parts of Asia, dog meat farms are as commonplace as chicken farms. Changing views of the younger generation and collaborative rescue groups are helping to close down this type of operation. Humane Society International is a leader in coordinating these closures and finding new homes for the rescued dogs.

Last year, I wrote a story about a similar batch of puppies who were transported to Hagerstown, Maryland, to be re-homed. I drove away with a story and a new family member, Hachi. I can say with certainty that it will take a very patient person to adopt one of these rescued puppies. They were raised in cages very similar to our wire-type travel kennels but without the benefit of a smooth plastic floor. House training will definitely be a challenge, as they spent their entire lives simply doing their business in the cage. 

Things that are normal to us can be terrifying to these rescues. Loud noises, for example, can still send Hachi under the couch. Families with another dog may be better suited for one of these puppies, as long as the family dog has a patient nature. Stairs, leashes, even grassy backyards are completely foreign to these dogs, so you have to take things day by day.
