The Starbucks is part of the new Skyland Town Center in Southeast.

If you are a resident of the city that has been wishing for a drive-thru Starbucks, you won’t have to wish much longer. The developers of Skyland Town Center have announced two new tenants for the mixed-use development, including a Starbucks. The new store is slated to open in 2021 and will be the first drive-thru Starbucks in the city. Starbucks joins Chase Bank, Lidl grocery store, and CVS as the first tenants in the new 275,000-square-foot retail development.

Drive-thru Starbucks stores are a common occurrence in most big cities across the nation. But tight spaces have made it difficult to build any drive-thru retail stores in the District. The new drive-thru store will be 2,500 square feet and surrounded by retail shops, restaurants, and two above-ground parking garages. Chase Bank will open first, followed by Starbucks sometime near the end of the year.

Skyland Town Center is a new commercial and residential development located in Southeast D.C. near Naylor Rd. and Alabama Ave. The 18.5-acre space being developed by WC Smith will have retail, medical, dining, and residential space, creating a live-work atmosphere. The project will deliver 450 apartments to the housing-starved city with 264 units scheduled to be ready for lease this fall.

“We know that residents in every part of D.C. want access to amenities, and so that is what we are bringing to Skyland,” said D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. “We were thrilled to announce last year that Lidl is on the way, and now we are pleased to be able to say that this project is shaping up to be a true town center that will deliver jobs and opportunity to the Ward 7 community.”

The developer is also working to add other retail tenants including restaurants, medical offices, and a fitness center.
