A limited number of permits will be distributed through a lottery system.

Golden Gate Canyon State Park is offering to help make things easier this holiday season and give folks a chance to cut down their own Christmas tree.

As announced by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), only 250 permits will be awarded through a lottery system. The entry period is open from November 1 through November 15, with one permit to be issued per household. The cost of a permit is $35.

Lottery winners will be randomly selected and notified by email the week of November 16, states CPW. Then, on December 5, those winners can visit Golden Gate Canyon State Park between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to pick out and cut down their Christmas trees.

"Trees must be cut with hand tools, such as a handsaw or an axe. Chainsaws and power saws are strictly prohibited," says CPW. "Tree selections include Douglas Fir, Ponderosa Pine, Lodge Pole Pine and Rocky Mountain Juniper."

To apply for a permit, visit the Golden Gate Canyon State Park website or cpwshop.com during that entry period.
