Another company is closing businesses due to coronavirus. Pet Valu, a pet food and supply store chain, has announced it will be closing and liquidating all of its locations in the U.S. The company’s Canadian stores will remain open. Liquidation is expected to begin immediately with discounts of 20 percent on remaining inventory. Pet grooming and self-serve dog wash facilities will remain open for the time being. Pet Valu has 358 stores across the United States.

Most pet retailers have experienced a boom during the pandemic as Americans adopt cats and dogs in record numbers. Stuck at home, people discovered it was the perfect time to adopt and acclimate a pet to their home. Pet owners have faced backorders on food and supplies and backlogs at veterinarians' offices. Pet Valu’s Chief Restructuring Officer, Jamie Gould, said unfortunately the company was unable to capitalize on the new pet supply demand.

"The Pet Valu U.S. team is proud to have met the needs of our devoted pet lover customers in the U.S. for more than 25 years. However, the company's stores have been significantly impacted by the protracted COVID-19-related restrictions. After a thorough review of all available alternatives, we made the difficult but necessary decision to commence this orderly wind down.”

Pet Valu locations are smaller, boutique-like stores that sell a mix of regular and high-end pet food brands. The U.S. e-commerce site has already been shuttered. Pet Valu customers can continue to accrue points through the store's loyalty system through November 21, 2020, but all rewards must be redeemed by December 13, 2020. Discounts are expected to increase as the liquidation sale winds down. There are more than 50 Pet Valu locations in Maryland and Virginia.
