The Hawkeye State has some seriously weird laws ...

Iowa may be known as the state of cornfields and pig farms (it’s the largest producer of corn and pork in the country), but it also has a few really weird laws. It’s no surprise that some of them have a frontier feel given Iowa’s Old West history (Jesse James robbed his first train in Adair). Check them out here before you end up breaking them.

1. You can’t sell drugs unless you have a drug tax stamp.

Be sure you get a tax stamp before selling those illegal drugs.

2. Ministers must have a permit to take liquor across state lines.

This one applies to wines for sacraments such as communion and other religious practices. Those whiskey-toting ministers are just out of luck.

3. It’s illegal to read palms in Cedar Rapids without a permit.

Additionally, no fortune-telling, no phrenology practice, no palmistry, and no clairvoyancy is to be tolerated. Keep your hands, heads, and minds to yourself in eastern Iowa.

4. Men may not wink at women they don’t know in Ottumwa.

Okay, we agree with this one. Winking is just creepy, men (even if you do know the woman). Just don’t do it.

5. One-armed piano players must perform for free.

Technically, they’re probably doing double the work. Shouldn’t they get paid double?

6. Horses are forbidden to eat fire hydrants in Marshalltown.

What was going on in the Old West to come up with this one?

7. In Dubuque, a hotel must have a hitching post and a bucket for water in front of the building.

Must be to keep those fire hydrant-eating horses in check.

8. In Indianola, the ice cream man and truck are banned.

Well, now, that’s just plain mean.

9. In Fort Madison, firefighters must practice fighting a fire for 15 minutes before attending an actual fire.

Plan those fires accordingly, folks.

10. In Mount Vernon, it’s illegal to fire a missile onto a highway without written consent from the city council.

Thank the good lord for this one (well, unless the city council is into that sort of thing).

Have you broken any of these laws? Do you know of any even weirder ones we may have missed? Let us know in the comments!
