It's the perfect time of year for toasting marshmallows in the backyard.

Sitting by your own bonfire is one of the best ways to spend a chilly evening. According to Allstate Insurance, there are many things to consider when you set up a fire pit. Before you light that first match, take a look at these safety tips.

Location is everything.

You need to build your fire at least 10 feet from any structures (house, shed, etc.) in any direction. 20 to 25 feet is even better if you can manage it. Keep pets, camp chairs, and small children at least 3 feet away from the flames.

Make sure your fire is contained in a metal fire pit or encircled by stones. You don't want the flames spreading because you don't have a proper setup.

Avoid plastic at all costs.

Planning on using broken-down boxes to act as a firestarter? Make sure you peel off any packing tape, check for loose packing peanuts, and only use the brown cardboard portion of the boxes. Be sure to stack your wood around and on top of the cardboard, as lighter paper ashes can be swept up in the wind, spreading embers as they go.

Safety comes first.

Have a garden hose turned on nearby, ready to go as needed. If you've got a fire extinguisher handy, even better! Be aware of the weather conditions before you even get started and don't make a fire if the winds are high. If the beer is flowing, don't let the drunk guy try to light his own farts, and let common sense prevail.

With a little bit of planning and a bag of marshmallows, a fire pit is a great family-friendly option for chilly winter nights. Remember all of these safety guidelines the next time you light up.
