If you're looking for the next summer hit at the theaters, check out "Where the Crawdads Sing."

It's a far cry from superhero movies and teenage love stories, but this period drama tells the intriguing story of an abandoned child who has to navigate life on her own.

Based on a best-selling novel by the same name (written by Delia Owens), Where the Crawdads Sing takes place in the marshlands and seashore of North Carolina's Outer Banks. It has everything you could want from a summer film: romance, crime, courtroom drama, and a look back to the 1960s. It starts off with a harsh, bleak view of rural life, and slowly unfolds into a coming-of-age story full of murky twists and turns.

Take a look at the trailer:

With Reese Witherspoon at the helm as an executive producer, you know that this movie is going to be full of authentic Southern details. From the costumes to the food and the gorgeous swags of Spanish moss, you'll be transported to a different time and place entirely. Daisy Edgar-Jones plays the main character Kya, a self-sufficient, self-taught biologist, and artist. Think Jane Goodall combined with Georgia O'Keeffe and you've got the picture.

Crawdads' soundtrack is bound to be a big hit too, with a signature ballad penned by none other than pop star, Taylor Swift. "Carolina" hints at the darkness in the story to come while evoking the mysteries of the marsh.

So, if you want to be transported to the Deep South of the 1950s to experience a unique crime drama, check out Where the Crawdads Sing once it opens in theaters on July 15. The movie should be appropriate for all but children younger than teenagers due to its violence and sexual content.
