The annual entertainment and comic book convention was set to take place from July 23 to 26.

It's official: San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) will not be happening this year. This marks the first time in its 50-year history that it's been canceled. The annual convention was scheduled to take place in San Diego, California, from July 23 to 26.

Comic-Con International released the following statement regarding the cancellation of SDCC:

"For the first time in its 50-year history San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC), the organizers behind the annual pop culture celebration, announced today with deep regret that there will be no Comic-Con in 2020. The event will instead return to the San Diego Convention Center from July 22-25, 2021.

Recognizing that countless attendees save and plan for its conventions each year, and how many exhibitors and stakeholders rely upon its events for a major portion of their livelihood, they had hoped to delay this decision in anticipation that COVID-19 concerns might lessen by summer. Continuous monitoring of health advisories and recent statements by the Governor of California have made it clear that it would not be safe to move forward with plans for this year."

Those who purchased badges for the 2020 convention will be able to request a refund or transfer their badges for the 2021 Comic-Con. An email will be sent to badge holders in the coming weeks that explains the refund/transfer process. Those who booked hotels through onPeak will automatically receive refunds.

SDCC is arguably the most important geek event of the entire year—more than 135,000 people descended upon the San Diego Convention Center for last year's convention. Over the past decade, the convention has become a go-to place for major film studios, like Marvel Studios and Warner Bros., to unveil trailers, casting news, and more about their upcoming films, or for actors from popular television shows like AMC's The Walking Dead and HBO's Westworld to participate in panels and autograph/photo opportunities.
