He was 91.

Musical legend Stephen Sondheim died early Friday morning in his home in Roxbury, Connecticut. He was 91.

His lawyer and friend, F. Richard Pappas, announced the death. Pappas stated he did not know the cause nor that he had no knowledge of Sondheim being ill. Sondheim reportedly celebrated Thanksgiving with friends on Thursday, said Pappas.

Master composer and lyricist, Sondheim was one of Broadway's best. Having written lyrics for West Side StoryGypsySweeney Todd, and Into the Woods, among countless others, Sondheim changed the way in which stage musicals were created. The first Broadway show Sondheim wrote both the words and music was the farcical 1962 comedy A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, which won a Tony Award for best musical and went on to run for more than two years.
