The Denver City Council recently approved for Urban Peak to add to its one-story shelter and turn it into a five-story homeless youth center.
The area near South Broadway is about to change, but for the better. Recently, the Denver City Council approved rezoning in order to allow Urban Peak, a nonprofit organization that provides services for homeless youth or those at imminent risk of becoming homeless, to build upon its one-story center. Urban Peak provides five essential services, according to its website, including an overnight shelter, street outreach team, a Drop-In Center, Education and Employment services, and supportive housing.
Christian Carlson, CEO of Urban Peak, told 9NEWS, "Housing is really where we stumble, there just isn't enough affordable housing in Denver."
Which is where this new five-story building comes in. The new building will include transitional housing as well as three floors of apartments, with 40 shelter beds and up to 60 units of permanent housing. It will be located at 1630 S. Acoma St., near the Platt Park neighborhood.
