The leaves are just beginning to turn and you may be wondering where to go to admire them. Here's a list of some of the prettiest spots in Northern Virginia this time of year.

Autumn in Virginia is quite a sight to behold. Unfortunately, 2019 has had some uneven rainfall so the colors may not be as vibrant as they have been in the past. Nonetheless, there are plenty of quaint spots to immerse yourself in nature. If you don't have time for a leaf-peeping drive, try one of these destinations.

Occoquan Regional Park

Address: 9751 Ox Road | Lorton, VA

Head to Lorton to see the leaves turning at this local riverfront park. Even the drive in will be beautiful as you cruise alongside a heavily wooded walking path. Try their new restaurant, Brickmaker's Cafe, and enjoy a glass of wine or a light meal with a view of the Occoquan. Their patio is dog-friendly, so leashed pets can hang out with you while you eat and then walk with you through the park.

Great Falls

Address: 9200 Old Dominion Drive | McLean, VA

Go for a picnic or make it into a full a photo op session at one of the scenic overlooks, but don't miss a trip to Great Falls in the autumn. The views of the rushing water will have you mesmerized and the fall foliage makes it even more magical. You'll want to get there early to avoid the crowds, so set that alarm!

Clifton

This entire town was made for leaf-peeping. No matter which direction you head in from, you'll drive through lovely canopy roads and small horse farms. Once there, head to Trattoria Villagio for a hearty pasta lunch or some wine out on the piazza. They'll have the outdoor fireplace going, so try to get as close as you can to that coveted spot. After lunch, walk around and explore the local boutiques and antique stores for a nice, relaxing afternoon.

Leesburg

If you haven't explored the quaint downtown region of Leesburg, you're missing out. Skip the outlet mall (or go afterward) and just enjoy the sight of the changing leaves on the winding drive out to the historic main streets. Take the back roads if you can! Meander through local breweries and shops to work up an appetite before stopping at Bites for a grilled cheese sandwich. You also want to stop by Mom's Apple Pie for a quick slice!
