It's tulip time!

If you live in Northern Virginia, chances are, you've heard about the annual spring festival at Burnside Farms. Thousands of daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips are planted every year, and the fields are open to the public for picking. Talk about Instagram heaven!

The festival is currently underway and will last at least a couple of weeks, usually 20-30 days, as the tulips continually bloom.

Tickets are being doled out with an hourly maximum capacity this year, and you'll have to sign up for a specific arrival time. Once you're there, you'll be free to roam, take photos, and pick flowers to your heart's content. It's a bit of a hike around the flower fields, so wear comfortable shoes and bring a bottle of water.

For the 2021 festival, the prices have gone up to $19 per adult and $9 per child (ages 3 to 12), available for purchase online here. There's also an additional service fee of $1.50 per ticket. Consider the uptick in price due to the rising costs of operating such a big scale activity for a small farm. You get to pick 5 tulip stems for free with each entry.

Tickets are released weekly, and once they go on sale, they'll sell out fast. Because of the new capacity guidelines, you must buy them ahead of time. Don't expect to just show up this year.

Short of buying a plane ticket to Holland, you probably won't get a chance to see this many gorgeous flowers in one place any time soon. This festival only happens once a year before the farm turns to its summer sunflower festival.

The coolest part about this pick-your-own setup is you can pay $1 more and keep the tulip bulb. With the proper care, you can store and replant the bulbs for several more years of lovely blooms. As a gardener, I can tell you that's a bargain for some of the fancier varieties like ruffled parrot tulips or French tulips.
