The new museum near the beach pays homage to the mythical siren of the sea.
A new attraction near the beach is going to be a big draw this summer for mermaid lovers. Located in Berlin, Maryland, the Mermaid Museum is the first of its kind on the east coast. The museum opened in March and delves into the history and folklore behind the legendary tailed sea creature.
Visitors can view exhibits that run the gamut from pop culture to historical artifacts that explore man’s fascination with mermaids.
Mermaids have always been popular; perhaps the most famous is Ariel, from The Little Mermaid. Disney’s movie outpaced the original tale by Hans Christian Anderson, building a world of toys, accessories, rides, and shows all dedicated to the film.
The Mermaid Museum is the brainchild of Alyssa Maloof, a photographer by trade. Located in a historic building, the two-story space is a respite for tourists roaming the ocean town on hot summer days. The museum is filled with information about mermaid sightings and mermaid-themed objects, including a mermaid-shaped “Cheeto.” There is also a kid's corner where little ones can play dress-up in mermaid accessories and a prop bathtub with a tail where you can snap a photo.
The Mermaid Museum is located at 4 Jefferson St., Berlin, Maryland. And it's open Tuesday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free for kids and $11 for adults. The museum also has a gift shop where fans can buy their own mermaid tail!
